There are several reasons why this is such a wise choice. For one thing, being that cars depreciate in value the moment that they drive off the lot, purchasing a used car is a smart financial investment. Also, buying a used car can oftentimes save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Plus, if you are able to pay for the car in cash, you won’t have to worry about having to pay a note each month.
However, since a used car is one that has had previous owners, it’s important that you test drive it before actually buying it. If you’re curious to know about some of the things that a successful test drive entails, we’ve provided you with a list of five things below:
Thoroughly inspect the vehicle. Before even getting into a car to drive it, the first thing that you should do is thoroughly inspect it. This would include looking at the exterior of the car for signs of any damage and also checking the air pressure of the tires. It’s also a good idea to look at the condition of the seats and the flooring inside of the vehicle too. After all, if the car doesn’t look like it’s in good condition, there’s no real reason to drive it.
Test the controls. To insure that your test drive is going to be a safe one, don’t forget to also test all of the main controls. This would include the lights (including the hazards), the windshield wipers, the steering wheel and also the transmission. You can test the transmission by making sure that it easily shifts from park to drive. Don’t forget to test the brakes as well.
Pre-select a driving route. Something else that you should do is pre-select a driving route. This is something that you should discuss with the car salesperson or private owner. It needs to be a route that does not just consist of the roads or the highway but a combination of both. That way, you can get a feel for how the car drives at all kinds of speeds.
Negotiate the test drive time. Say that you were buying a used car from Nettleton Auto Sales. You definitely are not going to learn as much as you would like by driving for only 5-10 minutes. About 20 minutes is standard.
